I’m the last stop on the Rules of Engagement blog tour. It’s been a lot of fun to read all the reviews and interviews with Amber. If you’ve missed these blog posts, you can go here to see the blog tour schedule.

For Annemarie Whitted, her youngest sister’s engagement starts as a happy event, and ends as a slap in the face when she comes to the harsh realization that she’s a failure at relationships, a person in stasis. Annemarie is motivated and organized, a woman on a mission, and she’s getting married now.

Her Rules of Engagement ensure she’ll make the right choice, and her committee will find her potential eternal companions. She assigns the job to her closest sister, Lisa, and Lisa’s husband, Tanner. Of course, Tanner comes with baggage— his brother, Ben, Annemarie’s lifelong nemesis.

The war between the two of them gives a brand new meaning to Annemarie’s Rules of Engagement, and his presence isn’t helping her at all. Especially when he disapproves of her methods and questions every step she makes. Especially when their forced proximity makes each of them really see each other for the first time. Especially when she discovers that her heart has secret corners she never knew, and that the Rules might have been her biggest mistake of all.

Here’s my review:

Rules of Engagement deals with something serious for singles everywhere- the pressure to be married by a certain age, especially in the church. During her younger sister’s engagement party, Annemarie overhears a conversation about herself, and she’s convinced she must marry as soon as possible. Never mind that she doesn’t have a fiancé, or even a boyfriend. She comes up with a list of rules to find the guy, and asks her favorite sister for help.
Her brother-in-law’s brother, Ben, is someone she’s known her whole life, but for some reason, they’ve never gotten along. As Annemarie goes from date to date, she and Ben begin to see the other in a new way.
There were so many things I loved about this story, especially the dry humor. Such an “Amberism”. As serious as the theme could turn out to be, there are absolute laugh-out scenes where I couldn’t stop grinning.
I liked to see Annemarie’s list at the beginning of some chapters. As the story progresses, it’s clear there is only one way for it to end, even though Annemarie keeps resisting.
I really loved the main characters, Annemarie and Ben. I fell in love with them and their little quirks, their reluctance to open their eyes and their fear to open their hearts. The tension between them is so well done, and kept me from putting the book down until the last page. The emotions are written in such a way that had me invested in the story, and I even wanted to smack some sense into Annemarie and Ben at times.
Of course, there is a very sweet, very satisfying ending, and I think I even sighed at that.
If you liked Glitch, then you you’ll love ‘Rules of Engagement’. It’s clean, funny, and full of toe-curling romantic moments. I wholeheartedly recommend this one.
