Book Review- My Own Mr. Darcy

Jane Austen wrote six novels, and centuries later her work still inspires readers and writers alike. Such is the case with the book I’m reviewing today, My Own Mr. Darcy by Karey White.

From the blurb:
After being dragged to the 2005 movie Pride and Prejudice by her mother, sixteen-year-old Elizabeth’s life changes when Matthew Macfadyen’s Mr. Darcy appears on the screen. Lizzie falls hard and makes a promise to herself that she will settle for nothing less than her own Mr. Darcy. This ill-advised pledge threatens to ruin any chance of finding true love. During the six intervening years, she has refused to give any interested suitors a chance. They weren’t Mr. Darcy enough.
Coerced by her roommate, Elizabeth agrees to give the next interested guy ten dates before she dumps him. That guy is Chad, a kind and thoughtful science teacher and swim coach. While she’s dating Chad, her dream comes true in the form of a wealthy bookstore owner named Matt Dawson, who looks and acts like her Mr. Darcy. Of course she has to follow her dream. But as Elizabeth simultaneously dates a regular guy and the dazzling Mr. Dawson, she’s forced to re-evaluate what it was she loved about Mr. Darcy in the first place.

First, let’s establish this: I simply adore the 2005 movie version of Pride & Prejudice.

I could go on an on about the director Joe Wright’s creativity, the cinematography, and the magnificent portrayal of Mr. Darcy by Matthew MscFadyen , but I wouldn’t be able to make it justice. Just take my word for it—favorite movie ever. Period. (Shhh, I even have a whole Pinterest board dedicated to it.)

You understand now why I had to read My Own Mr. Darcy, and I’m so glad I did.

This is the review I posted on Amazon and Goodreads:
It’s 4 1/2 stars.
I’m like Elizabeth Barrett- I watched the Pride & Prejudice 2005 movie version and fell in love with it, especially with Mr. Darcy as portrayed by Matthew Macfadyen. Now that my partiality is established, you can’t hold it against me.
The blurb and cover of “My Own Mr.Darcy” pulled me in right away. Elizabeth is a quirky character with a strong voice, and her relationship with her best friend Janessa is exactly the kind you wish to have with your best friend. Then she meets the quiet Chad, because that’s the way he is. Even though he’s not the kind of character to show off, and Elizabeth is sort of forced to date him, I soon realized there was more to him than what I could see. Elizabeth knows this too, but knowing and accepting are different things, as we find out. When Matt enters the scene, in all his broodiness blue-eyed glory, things just get more complicated.
It’s a light, enjoyable read, and the story is absolutely adorable, even if you haven’t watched the movie.

Karey White is having a book signing in Salt Lake City on Saturday, September 14th, 2013, from 4-6 pm. You can read more about it here:

So what would Jane do? I think she would be very humbled to know how much she’s influenced women and literature.
