The Setting of a Scene

The setting for my novel is in northern Portugal, mainly in the city of Braga. My goal for sharing photos of these places is to bring you closer to them when you read those scenes, to make it more alive and real.

Today’s blog post won’t be very long or wordy. I’m here to introduce to you the setting of a short (albeit cute) scene:

It’s a Sunday evening in early June. Josh and Sofia had dinner with their friends Paulo and Margarida, who are married and have a one year-old daughter. After saying good-bye to their friends, Josh and Sofia go for a drive and end up at Bom-Jesus. Bom-Jesus means ‘Good-Jesus’ and it’s the name of a Catholic church (and pilgrimage destination) and public formal gardens.

Even though it’s the wrong time of day, here is the first photograph:

Do you see the pergola in the middle of the photo? Just beyond that location, there are some park benches toward the other direction.

This is the view from there:

This is Braga, toward the western side of the city.

So imagine this is early evening instead of morning. Imagine a guy and a girl, sitting on a bench, overlooking the city, talking and discovering about each other. As for the rest, you’ll have to wait a few more months. 😉

How important do you think are the situation and place for the setting of a scene?

P.S.- Here’s a link to Wikipedia to learn more about Bom-Jesus: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bom_Jesus_do_Monte
